Cordless area imagers use an integrated radio to communicate with a base station or a computer. The most popular is Bluetooth with a range of up to 300', but a few models use an analog radio with frequencies ranging from 900 MHz to 2.4 GHz. If the base station is used for communication as well as charging, it will connect to a computer with a USB, PS/2 (keyboard wedge), or serial RS232 cable. Cordless area imagers read barcodes omnidirectionally, so the barcodes can be orientated in any direction. Some area imagers can also capture digital images and signatures.
